Split Rock
Located about 20 miles north of Two Harbors, Split Rock Lighthouse is one of the most photographed icons of Minnesota and is probably one of the most photographed lighthouses in the country. Its 54 foot yellow brick octagonal shaped tower sits atop a 130 foot cliff overlooking Lake Superior. Split Rock Lighthouse was built in 1910 in response to a November 1905 storm on the Great Lakes that lost more than thirty ships on Lake Superior. Inactivated in 1969, the lighthouse is the center piece of Split Rock State Park. The light station was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1969.
In November 1975 a severe winter storm blew on Lake Superior. The Edmund Fitzgerald was enroute from Superior, Wisconsin to Detroit, Michigan with a full load of iron ore pellets. She was carrying a crew of 29 sailors. It was on November 10, 1975 that the Edmund Fitzgerald went down near Sault Ste. Marie with all hands. Every November 10th, the light at Split Rock Lighthouse is lit in memory of these 29 souls lost at sea.
